The correlation between wellbeing and brain health

With the more recent trendiness of wellness taking over social media and bloggers everywhere, it always surprises me how little brain health is involved in the discussion of this topic.

Not only does our mental health affect our wellbeing, but so does our physical brain health. Both our metaphysical and physical minds have a lot to do with our sense of wellbeing. Let’s take a look at how you can practice wellness, how to improve your brain health, and how the two are connected.

What is wellbeing? Tips & tricks

Essentially, wellbeing is the state of being happy, comfortable, healthy. You could say it is a state of content-ness. Wellness is practiced using various methods with the motive of wellbeing. This can be via incorporating practices into your daily life that improve your quality of life.

These involve both mental and physical methods. Maintaining a strong connection between your mental and physical health is key. Remaining consistent will also help you preserve this sense of wellbeing. Here are a few tips I use to prolong these feelings of content-ness:

1. Staying active

I don’t necessarily mean spending hours in the gym every single day or doing strenuous exercises. When I stay being active I mean making sure to move each day. Personally, I find myself sitting in my office chair for the majority of my day. I always make sure to get up and move every hour.

I also like to break up my day with a walk. If I don’t get the chance to stop and walk during the day due to a busy schedule, I always ensure I go for a walk or short run when my workday has ended. If this is something that isn’t that appealing to you, maybe find something more interesting like trying out a yoga class!

Find fun activities that align with your preferences and desired levels of activeness. Staying active holds countless benefits for both the mind and body.

2. Eating clean and finding balance in your diet

If you know me, you know that I love to enjoy desserts and junk food. However, I find it is vital for my mental and physical wellbeing to find a balance. Eating mindfully is much more effective than trying to put yourself on an unrealistically strict diet that will likely set you up for failure. Instead, be patient with yourself and try to introduce more colours to your plate.

Do some research into different foods and their nutrients levels, making it easier to optimize what you are eating so you can enjoy eating delicious and nourishing foods. Eating healthy doesn’t have to be boring!

3. Get to know yourself and always take time to recharge

Something that can be hard to deal with when getting to know yourself is finding out things about yourself that you do not like. Instead of going down the path of ‘get to know yourself and love all your negative traits!’ that is often glorified on social media platforms, try getting to know yourself and doing the inner work necessary to be the person you want to be.

Spend some time with yourself, write down your thoughts, confront both your positive and negative traits and do the work. The wellness journey often misunderstood and seems like a walk in the park… In my opinion, a big part of the journey to the self has to do with pain and rebirth.

Keep your eye on the end of the tunnel because there is nothing more liberating than positive change! Humans were meant to evolve. Work towards your ‘true’ form and it will set you free!

How to improve your brain health: The basics

Improving your brain health is about improving the physical health of your brain, which in return enhances your brains function.

This assists a person’s ability to function well in life and increases wellbeing. When your brain is in good health, you will have an advantage when it comes to solving problems, making wise decisions, forming/keeping healthy relationships, and maintaining a healthy emotional balance.

When you take care of your brain, your overall performance in life will skyrocket! This can be done by prioritizing your physical vessel and exercising your brains abilities. Here are a few tips that you can take to improve your brain health:

1. Staying Hydrated

The majority of the human body consists of water. In fact, about 80% of your brain is made up of water! That being said, staying well hydrated is vital for your brain to function properly. Making sure you drink enough water will help you remain focused and alert.

Studies have also shown us a link between dehydration and mood imbalances. When you drink enough water, your brain’s temperature is able to regulate properly, clearing out toxins and dead cells so it can perform in an optimal state. Not only are our brains made up of mostly water, but so is the rest of our bodies.

To put it in one way, we are essentially walking house plants with rather complex emotions and thoughts!

2. Brain exercises

Although your brain isn’t technically a muscle, white and grey matter do function in a similar way to other muscles in the body. Exercising your brain is referred to as ‘brain training’. This is essential for brain health and can be practiced in countless ways.

A few examples are reading a book, challenging your motor skills, problem-solving, learning something new, etc. One of my favorite brain training techniques is meditation.

By practicing meditation, you are helping fine-tune your memory whilst increasing your brains focusing abilities.

The more you train your brain, the better control you will have over your brains function(s). The better control you have over your brains function(s), the easier your life is.

3. Microdosing or taking other brain health supplements

Microdosing psychedelics has been shown to improve brain function. Specifically, microdosing may enhance cognitive abilities, promote neuroplasticity, and assist in controlling/balancing your mood.

Thanks to a study of that scanned of the human brain under the influence of LSD and other smaller microdosing studies, we know that this practice holds crazy potential for brain health and wellbeing. Aside from microdosing, there are many other brain health supplements on the market.

Many of these are referred to as ‘nootropics’. Some of the more commonly used nootropics include:

Finding connections between wellbeing and brain health:

A huge connection between the two is that without one, the other is unlikely to occur. Brain health is vital for wellbeing while wellbeing will improve brain health.

A lot of practices, methods, and tips for one can also be beneficial for the other. For example, meditation is beneficial for both wellbeing and brain health. Same with staying hydrating, active, and taking brain health supplements!

We know that humans are extremely sensitive to their environment. Knowing this, we can also work out that we are equally sensitive to our internal environment. Wellbeing is a life-long journey and brain health should always be a huge part of that.

If you wish to fully experience wellbeing on a large scale, it is time you start to do what you can to increase the physical health of your brain.

Additionally, good brain health is also linked to longevity and happiness. Studies show that individuals who actively increase their brains health not only live longer but also live a more happy life. That being said, maintaining good brain health will assist you in living a long and happy life!

What better way to improve your wellbeing than practicing methods that increase your lifespan and improve your overall happiness while you are here? Life is finite which is why we should really try to make the most of our time on Earth. Staying in turn with your mind and body may just be the key to doing that.

The best way to achieve this is by listening to what your body is telling you. Whether you realise it or not, your body is constantly trying to communicate with you in the ways it can, sending your signs and signals to what is working and what isn’t.

We are unique creatures with specific needs and requirements. The only way to know what those are for you is by listening to yourself. That may just be the most exciting thing about the wellness journey, how incredibly different it is for each and every one of us.

I think this displayed a beautiful part of the human experience; the complexity and individuality each of us so effortlessly hold.

Closing:

Wellbeing means to thrive and not simply survive. To thrive you must focus on both the mental and physical aspects of yourself. A phrase I like to use is ‘As above, so below. So below, as above’. This comes from Hermetic texts nearly 2000 years ago, yet its truth radiates today.

This is a timeless statement that consistently rings in my mind. You must care for your health overall. If one part of you suffers, another part will inevitably suffer too. Wellbeing focuses on wellness as a whole.

Brain health is one of the many aspects of wellness that, in my opinion, you cannot truly experience a consistent sense of wellbeing without it. Are you ready to start prioritizing your brain and its health so you can openly live your life in an authentic state of wellbeing?
