How To Get The Most Out Of Your Microdosing Journey!

What is Microdosing?

To begin, I will give a brief explanation of microdosing for anyone unsure or new to the topic. Essentially, it is the act of ingesting a micro-amount or a psychedelic substance with the motive of improving your life in various areas as well as boosting brain function and cognitive abilities.

This may seem like a bit of a crazy practice, however, it is important to note that these micro-amounts of psychedelic are so small that they provide no psychoactive side-effects. This means you will not get high! Instead, the effects are rather subtle and you will notice the improvements/benefits more and more with given time.

The most common psychedelics that individuals use for this practice are different forms of lysergamides, such as LSD, or mushroom/truffle species that contain psilocybin.

Here is a short list of some of the most commonly reported benefits:

  • Increased creativity
  • Balanced/stabilized mood
  • Enhanced cognitive function(s)
  • Reduced anxiety, stress, and/or irritability
  • Amplified self-motivation and inspiration
  • Increased focus and energy
  • Stronger neuroplasticity abilities
  • Decreased brain fog
  • Improved sense of overall wellbeing

These are just a few benefits that some may gain from taking these micro-amounts of psychedelic substances. Now, let’s get into how you can get the most out of your microdosing journey!

Tips & Tricks for beginner and experienced microdosers

To give a clear break-down of all the ‘tips and tricks’ I have for you, I will divide each of them into sections.

Assess your motive

I always like to suggest coming up with a motive before trying your first microdose. Of course, this isn’t totally necessary, however, I feel it can be helpful. Do your research on the topic and figure out why others are doing it and the benefits they are getting out of it. Figure out what applies to you and go into it will a clear motive. This ‘motive’ can change, of course. If you do take this step, do make sure you hold a balance and also have an open mind.

When I first started microdosing, I didn’t know what to expect so I went into it hoping to simply improve my mental health as I was going through a severe depression. I learned very quickly that it not only helped me with that area of my life but with so many other areas of my life as well-many of which I was not expecting! Pay close attention in the beginning as to how it sits with you as this will help you with the next step below.

*Please note that I do not suggest anyone microdosing in replacement of anti-depressant medication. This is how it personally affected me. Advise a health care professional before microdosing if you suffer from depression.*

Figuring out your dosing schedule

This is a very tricky area to touch on as absolutely everyone has their own schedule and you don’t have to stick to a super strict schedule to get benefits from it.

The best advice I can say is to listen to your mind and body and do what fits best with your ‘motive’ and lifestyle.

Only looking to boost your creativity? Then maybe you should be making sure that you are microdosing on days when you are working on creative projects. Looking for some extra motivation to finish your project with a tight deadline? Perhaps you will want to microdose that week to assist in completing your project in time. Wanting to boost your overall mood or brain function? Then maybe you should be microdosing on an actual long-term or structured schedule.

The most common schedule is one day on, two days off. It is not the best idea to be microdosing for multiple days in a row as you do unfortunately build a tolerance with psychedelics , meaning you will not get the same effects vs if you were to take a few day breaks in between each dose. Again, do you and do what is best for your journey!

Time your doses right

It is wise to always take your doses in the morning rather than in the afternoon or evening. Psychedelics, even in micro-amounts, stimulate the brain, which can result in an increase in energy, focus, and alertness.

For this reason, it makes sense to always take your microdose in the AM as the subtle effects can last from 8-10 hours. This is especially critical for those with sleeping disorders or microdosers who simply have trouble getting to sleep some nights.

Microdosing 101: always take your dose in the morning-preferably with some nourishing food in your belly!

Keep a special journal

This is a super helpful tip that I don’t see many people talking about. Keeping a microdosing journal has helped me a lot. By doing this, you will be able to recognize patterns along the way and be able to truly optimize your journey.

I always write down things like the date I microdosed, how I felt before I took my dose, and how much sleep I got the night before, what I ate/drank that day. etc. After completing my day, I check back in and write down how the day went and anything out of the ordinary that happened, like saying ‘no’ to a burger and saying ‘yes’ to a salad without much hesitation… and yes, that is out of the ordinary for me sometimes! This way you can identify the benefits you are getting from your journey with greater ease and possibly notice other benefits that develop over time.

It can also help you be in tune with things to do or avoid on dose days. For example, at the very beginning of my journey, I was feeling very over-stimulated at times, which got a little bit overwhelming. I was keeping a journal and experimented with adding and cutting out certain food/drinks to see if that was the issue. I very quickly connected the dots and realised that drinking coffee alongside a microdose was what had triggered this sudden over-stimulation and anxiety, rather than the microdose itself. When I stopped drinking coffee on dose days, my over-stimulation stopped and I was able to find a good balance of natural feeling energy and alertness.

Keep a journal if you want to be totally in-tune with your mind, body, and doses.

Don’t be afraid to reach out: stay close to the community

I cannot stress this enough: don’t be afraid to reach out! This can be via Reddit, microdosing chats, friends/colleagues that microdose, etc.

If you purchase your products from a legal supplier, you can always reach out to them as well and discuss anything and ask any questions you may have. Their job is to work with each client and do their best to help unlock the full potential of your journey.

The world of microdosing is expanding, meaning the knowledge base is as well. Always stay up to date by reading up on new articles and studies on the subject! The community is growing and I encourage you to be an active member in it. This is a rather new practice, so don’t ever be afraid to reach out whether you are a ‘beginner’ or an ‘experienced’ doser.

Support suppliers you trust

Slowly, more legal suppliers are surfacing as the community grows and certain laws allow this practice to exists off the black market. However, with all markets, there will be suppliers that are most interested in the profit of the sale rather than what it will do for the consumer. It isn’t very difficult to tell which suppliers are worth your trust and which are not.

Keep an eye out for who is interested in the community, the clients, and the actual psychedelic/microdosing movement. This practice holds a lot more potential than a sale.

Microdosing is a great way to normalize the different uses of psychedelics for people of all lifestyles. Hopefully, this will kick-start the whole movement and bring a bright future for all the different functions of psychedelics and those who wish to exercise the right to use them.

Maintain good health and stay active

This last point may be obvious to some, however, I am going to add it in as I think it is super important. When I am talking about ‘good health’ I am talking about both mental and physical health.

With nearly any brain/health supplement, it will work at its best when taken alongside a healthy and happy life. The nice thing about taking a microdose is that it may actually assist you in the step of making healthier choices for the mind and body with more ease. Like I stated above, taking microdoses has actually helped me make better decisions for my health like eating a salad instead of a burger for example.

With more energy and motivation, it has also helped me get back into exercising, which is something I used to do all the time. I am not trying to tell you that you have to eat a salad every day and do heavy exercises. All I am saying is do your best by feeding your body the food and fuel it needs and be kind to yourself whether that is by resting when you need to or trying yoga or other activities. This will without a doubt improve your whole microdosing journey and the rest of your life.

Stay Active

Final Thoughts

I really hope that this article has helped those who are looking for more ways to improve their journey or those who are looking at beginning but don’t know where to start. Please do what is best for you.

One of my favourite things about microdosing is how personal it is and how unique everyone’s journey is. I also love the wide range of individuals and lifestyles that can benefit from this practice.

I wish you all the best with whatever path you choose to walk down and I thank you for being a part of this psychedelic movement. Real change starts from within.
